Abstract We present a theory of identity politics that builds on two ideas. First, when policy conflict renders certain social divide—economic or cultural—salient, voter identifies with her economic cultural group. Second, the slants beliefs toward stereotype group she with. obtain three implications. voters’ are polarized along distinctive features salient groups. if salience policies increases, rises, redistributive falls, and polarization becomes more correlated across issues. Third, shocks hurting conservative voters may trigger switch to identity, causing these demand less redistribution. discuss U.S. survey evidence in light
